The Black Hills Symphony League

Welcome to the Black Hills Symphony League.... celebrating its 32nd anniversary in 2014-15 — membership and support means you can be part of the symphony without playing a note.

Cello girlMission

To support the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra.

League members are all volunteers who support today’s Symphony and tomorrow’s musicians. The League is a major financial supporter of the Symphony.  The group has fun while working shoulder to shoulder on fundraising projects and in other ways to help welcome concert-goers to the Symphony events.

History

The League began in 1982. There are seven charter members who still belong to the League and help in achieving the mission. They are: Jacqueline Allen, Marcia Hill, Haze Pearson, Ethel Rounds, Jewel  Tatum, Nancy Thielen, and Della Trankle.

Meetings and Membership

Membership is open to anyone wishing to join in the fun. Meetings of the League are at 11:30 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in downtown Rapid City. The chair for membership is Vaud Oberlander (vaudeth7@q.com). The league does not meet in December, June or July.

Annual support provided to...

The Black Hills Symphony -- $10,000 or more.  In addition to its annual cash donation, the League has been providing new percussion instruments for a number of years. Last year, it raised enough money to buy and donate a four-piece timpani set used joyfully for the first time during the 2012-13 Symphony season.

Young Artist Competition – prize money and reception refreshments -- $1,100

Scholarships for undergraduates -- $1,000

Music scholarships for string camp -- $1,000

The Jack Knowles scholarship: $1,000

The Orlando Chamber music program -- $1,000

Adult orchestra chair sponsor -- $550

Student orchestra chair sponsor -- $250

Black Hills Chamber Music Society -- $750

The annual total contributions are $16,650 – all raised by volunteers with the support of the community.

Annual events and fundraisers

The major source of income is the annual Homes for the Holidays, along with the annual sneak-a-peek fundraiser. This year the event will be on the second weekend in November. The league also has various raffles at the Symphony concerts including two season tickets to the concerts and gift baskets. Two other events are the Young Artist Celebration and a membership luncheon on the third Wednesday in May.
