The Black Hills Symphony Orchestra (BHSO) recognizes that symphony experience can benefit music students and students can provide benefits to the BHSO. The BHSO has found:

1. Students require training, discipline and experience in order to succeed with the BHSO
2. Training discipline and experience is provided by organized high school orchestras and band music programs.
3. BHSO cannot provide training, discipline and experience to students in order to qualify them for the BHSO. BHSO therefore requires that all students applying for a chair in the BHSO must be currently enrolled in an instrumental music program offered by their school district at the time of audition and at all times that she or he is a student player for the BHSO.
